Liked snippets of the writing but didn’t really manage to connect with the story. Read it in a fragmented way because I was busy though.

When I finished the last chapter, the book took my breath like a good book should do. Almost everything leading up to the ending was haunting as well.

RS book group Sept 2017
The librarian was really excited that I was reading this because she says it's a great book but no one checks it out.

I... found it slow and a bit boring. It's a memoir, mostly of a man's speculations around a murder scenario that happened in his town when he was a young teen. It's a short book, but was such a slog for me that it took me a while. I think I'm just big in the mood right now for memoirs that are speculation about how other people felt/what other people did. Give me fiction or give me a memoir about your own life.

I wasn't sure why I had this in my kindle app and a couple of times my partner denied any knowledge of it so I thought something must have sparked my interest. It turns out it was indeed their doing but I'm so glad the initial denials made me think I'd chosen it and that I should read it! It's a beautifully written and beautifully observed book. Like the lives of the characters there's little fat here and little sentimentality. The characters are drawn so deftly, they have a nuance and depth the belies the brevity of the book, as does the complexity and interweaving strands of the narrative. It's also a nice reflection on memory and on the recollection of relationships of childhood.

He did Trixie so dirty. In the vein of In Cold Blood, a detached reflection on a crime the narrator could not have witnessed and was not privy to the emotional impact of - supported by the highly  dispassionate distance from most characters…apart from what felt like emotional manipulation of the worst sort - detached narration until my girl Trixie’s perspective, and torturing her to raise the emotional stakes. Ouch.
