Fierce and stubborn, like a fire that refuses to go out, Seraphina Dombegh is a joy and a wonder to experience, and this sequel proves that even more. Hartman’s world-building fascinated me to no end with her expansion of the history and lore of the Southlands as Seraphina trekked across Ninys, Samsam, and Porphyry to find her fellow ityasaari. Phina’s characterization (as well as that of secondary characters like the ever-disapproving Dame Okra, mischievous Abdo, considerate Kiggs, and wonderful Queen Glisselda) is magnificent, and we are introduced to so many more enchanting characters like her (each with their own unique arcs—some of them queer, I was happy to learn) in this novel. One of the greatest points of characterization was Jannoula as both a character and a foil. She’s an outright bitch, but she helps Phina understand who she is, and Jannoula’s own story is quite compelling by itself. At some points, I was surprised at where the story was going, but it also remained logical and within the context of both the world, the previous book’s continuity, and the established magic system, and I really appreciate that from an author. Porphyry was my favorite setting, mostly as a contrast to Goredd but also because we meet so many wonderful characters there. The story wasn’t always what I wanted it to be, but it was what it needed to be and what made sense for the story and I really respect that. We must make a place for all the figurative ityasaari in our world as well. “You will always be welcome in our garden.” Let us unleash our mind-fire upon our assailants! (Guaiong)

I absolutely loved this book. I have high expectations for Rachel Hartman, and as always, she exceeded them. This author has a way of reaching into my heart and addressing the things that are hurting in a way that makes me feel less alone. I don’t know how in the world she has this gift, or if by chance her books just come to me when I need them, but I am so grateful.

Shadow Scale is an excellent companion to Serafina. We learn more about Serafina and about the other half dragons, and extend our cast of characters. There’s a wider political story and a minor underlying love story as well. The villain is formidable, the protagonist flawed and admirable, and the world building extraordinary. I effortlessly recommend any Rachel Hartman book, and Shadow Scale is no exception.

Excellent world building, fantastic cast. Felt a bit slow / grim / repetitive at times through the second half.
