Slice life kind of book. Not nearly as good as Atonement.

A lot of this audiobook was fascinating and very well done. Cant fault it for entertainment on long drive. Enjoyed reading about well known areas of Bloomsbury- Huntley St, Spearmint Rhino ... Found the Huntingdon's storyline a bit much. Loved the circadian nature all written in one day. Lots of surgeon chat. Clearly very thoroughly researched so much so hard to find omissions (except maybe drinking water in operating theatre). Liked the squash scene a lot. Overall not quite for me bit dramatic/over emotional family bits but would certainly well done and would listen to another one.

I wasn’t feeling invested and other more interesting books became available

Cannot forgive him that chapter on playing squash. Enjoyed the beginning and the end, but disappointed by most of the middle. Have loved other books by him so will just have to accept that, for me, this was a blip!

I loved ‘Amsterdam’ so much and that was the first time I read something by Ian McEwan then mum gave me this one and I was expecting to race through it in the same way. Especially because it’s like set in the time span of 24hrs so I thought it was going to be well paced but I just didn’t really find that. OBVIOUSLY he’s an amazing writer of course but it was just quite a lot of points of really heavy detail about how the brain works and that didn’t really get me going. Towards the end it was a lot better, and I also liked the personalities of the kids in the book so that’s something. But yeah not groundbreaking in my 2024 reads so far

An incredibly intimate picture of a man. His innermost thoughts and motivations are as closely explored as his external activities. You can't help but think of Mrs. Dalloway. It was at once a slow and detailed read, while also being urgent and tension-filled. By the time the climactic moments come, you are so attuned to this man and those around him that you feel the impact of every decision and movement.

I'm not sure what's holding me back from giving it five stars. Certainly the quality of McEwan's writing warrants it and I'm sure any holes I could pick in the story were intentional on his part. I think my reticence is that the book has some very brutal moments that, while essential to the plot, are painful to read.
