I knew the story that I was about to step into, but I never anticipated how beautifully it would be written. Chanel's writing is transcendental, crossing from page to reader like butter and cutting through time, age, gender, and racial divides to deliver one undeniable truth. Her truth. Her use of metaphors is brilliantly done, her description are vivid, and her ability to emulate emotions is immaculate. I am so honoured to have had the privilege to read this book.

This is easily one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Chanel Miller is not only inspiring but also writes so beautifully. I actually listened to this book on Audible and hearing her tell her story made it even more impactful. This book is heartbreaking in so many ways however it is also inspiring to see how incredibly strong not only Miller but all survivors of rape and SA truly are.

This book is powerful, beautifully written, and both validating and infuriating. I had to stop reading at times because I was so angry, and of course it made me cry (though not as much as I would have anticipated, honestly). I got to listen to Chanel Miller read the book out loud, and I'm so glad I did. She reads it more slowly than I would have read a physical copy, and I'm grateful for spending the extra time sitting with this book and what happens in it. It made me realize things about some loved ones that I'd never considered before, and it made me realize things about myself, too. I'd recommend this book to anyone (and also recommend you follow @chanel_miller on Instagram because her comics are funny and inspirational and I just love the things she creates).

This is one of the most important books I read in 2020 and one of the hardest to get through. This book is shattering. The last fourth of the book felt a little stale, the content feeling a little redundant, but overall her prose was gorgeous.

I am so, so grateful to Chanel for being a writer and reflective thinker. I have heard before that the trial process is re-traumatizing. I’ve learned not to victim blame. I remember watching Elliot Rodger’s video after his shooting spree in Isla Vista and sobbing— horrified, afraid, angry. This book taught me again the pain that our justice system inflicts on survivors. The way the defense lawyers taught her to question everything she does. She wove together traumatizing, devastating events that have touched her life, showing patterns of violence and harm and the ways our systems of support are lacking, advocating for greater mental health resources.

It was stunning to me the way she was able to identify physical feelings in her recollections, how her throat tightened, or her head pounded. I’ve started to notice these details in myself now, too. Her humor, creativity, and value in joyful details balances the heavy material. The conversation with her mother, where she says you never know how things will turn out, will stay with me for a long time.
