Whew what to say about this book. It’s a real mixed bag. Incredibly misogynistic, heteronormative, and racist. At the same time, those things are typical of the genre. It definitely took away enjoyment from an otherwise pretty interesting story. I resented that I was kinda into it by the end, but the fact remains that I was.

Quintessential Western. I could visualize it as if it was a classic movie; the setting was immersive. I just wish it had less misogyny, but I suppose that comes with the era.

Didn't really know what to expect with Louis L'Amour. You hear so much about him and kind of assume, for bad reasons, that he was probably a bad writer. But after reading this, I think he was actually a surprisingly good writer.

The story moves and we don't slow down or get bogged down in the details, though he's not afraid of the clever turn of phrase. In fact, I see a lot of late Cormac McCarthy in this book, which surprised me a lot.

Gonna read at least one more book by L'Amour and then maybe a hundred more, depending on how I feel.

The weakest L'Amour novel I've read. But I learned some tracking tips, so it was still worth reading
