I really liked the concept and the world created for the book. The idea of demons or corelings ascending from the earth every evening to wreak havoc permeated through every small aspect of the book, from character interactions to the social structure to the economics.

Unfortunately, I really had a hard time with how the book was split up. Brett uses 3 POV characters (technically 4) but the majority of the story is spent following 2 of them. The book spends so much consecutive time with each character, which may not seem like a big problem...but every time I started really getting into a certain character (and it did take a while), the story would switch to someone else. By the time it would switch back, I'd forget a lot about what was going on, and take a step backwards. The character development felt pretty slow, and with each character spaced so far apart, I didn't feel very connected or invested in them.

The last third of the book picked up the pace and was a lot more enjoyable, both in terms of plotting and connecting with the characters, but it felt "too little too late."

This book was okay, but the writing felt childish and poor compared to the Name of the Wind and Mistborn and a Game of Thrones (which I have been reading recently). It improved as it went.

This book is amazing. The story is compelling, finished it off in more or less 4 days, neglecting work, college and girlfriend, in a rush to read the story of Arlen and Leesha; not a great fan of Rojen but can see its value in the story. And not 2 seconds after i finished the book started The Desert Spear in order to continue the story.

Love that the three main characters are each of one to the trinity of professions or the travelerers of the world, Messanger, Junglear and Herb Gathererer, it gives a very nice point of view to the life in those conditions no matter what path in life you choose.

I would have liked a more detailed description of the wards system, but as it is, is pretty good and plays it's part in the history without overshadowing it.

Overall, i highly recommend this book to any fantasy lover, is well worth it.
