Unapologetically violent, Caged Warrior tells the story of McCutcheon Daniels, an underaged cage fighter with a heart of gold. Despite some clunky exposition and a tendency toward stereotypical tropes, this book manages to build some tension and maintain a sweet center in the relationship between M.D. and his sister Gem. I read this thinking some of my students would enjoy it, and I believe I was right. It was the most requested for our lit circles in English 2. We'll know whether they like it for sure in the next couple weeks!

This review is for a NETGALLEY ARC ebook copy.

I wish I could give half stars because this is probably more like 3.5 stars for me. I have read most all of Mr. Alan's books and was really excited to get this. I got into MD's story quickly. I liked that it was different in that it focused on a kid that was pushed into underground MMA fighting by his dad. It feels like extensive research was done on the subject and I appreciated the glimpse into the world. I also liked the relationship between MD and his little sister.

The story took awhile to setup, but I knew the main conflict was between MD and his father. Then there was the issue of the teacher and the school change. I just felt that some things came together in a too convenient way. And then the end left many loose ends. I don't know-maybe so there could be another book?

I do think my students would enjoy reading this-especially boy reluctant readers.

I did not enjoy the writing style. The syntax was confusing at times and I felt the author wasn't using proper slang, so to speak. I couldn't find myself relating to the descriptions, there was far more telling rather than showing of events. I feel the storyline had so much potential, and would have been far better if the writing style was different.
