Although her solo books are guilty pleasures, these collaborations are really uneven, and I think, not nearly as well written. Still some nice moments, though.

Agnes and the Hitman is a quirky but enjoyable blend of romance and violence—Agnes, a food writer with anger management issues, is trying to organise a wedding against all odds while falling in love with Shane, a hitman with a complicated past. It's a fast-paced book, which works in its favour, pulling you along so you don't really have time to notice its flaws too much. I believe that Mayer wrote all the scenes from Shane's viewpoint, for example, and he's markedly less competent than Crusie when it comes to characterisation. Silly, verging on the ridiculous at times, but still a lot of fun. (And I think features maybe the second non-white character I've ever seen in a Crusie novel? A little stereotypical, but still present, which I suppose is a step up.)

Not quite a three, better than a two.

I liked a lot of the snappy dialogue, had trouble suspending my disbelief quite that much, and got annoyed that there was a lot of talk and not much action through agency as opposed to reactive action, of which there was a lot.

I couldn't help but like Agnes, who wasn't nearly as fragile by the end of the book as she started out.

In the end, I didn't feel the consequences lived up to the actions. It's a light frothy read and I'd recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre but hadn't heard of / read Jennifer Crusie before. All two of them.

This book was HILARIOUS and great. Rollicking hijinks, hitmen, mobsters, and Agnes has to pull off her best friend’s daughter’s wedding and keep her house. Also dead bodies. Amazing.
(Heat level: a few on page sex scenes, moderate spice but in a funny way.)

Agnes Crandall's life goes awry when a dog-napper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she’s staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems: he’s got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn’t so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes’s house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane’s life isn’t looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and—most dangerous of all—each other.

This book had some very funny moments, but also had very sloooow moments. I thought the ending could have came a little sooner, and none of the "mystery" was really a mystery. I still was entertained and enjoyed it.
