The interesting story and fantastic world building of this book are held back by its constant infantilization, objectification, and sexualisation of its one and only female character. Completely unrelated to the writing itself, the book is edited masterfully, with plot twists and cliffhangers always ending up just on the next page from the build up, and not a single sentence is divided between two pages, making for an easy and enjoyable read, in spite of the aforementioned issues.

There are no spoilers in the following review, but subtle references that you might enjoy after reading the book. Right from the get-go The End of Eternity was an extremely gripping story. Asimov masterfully crafts everything such that there are no plot-holes (at least to my Observation, reference intended). I was having doubts about the praises for one such work, supposedly a masterpiece of modern sci-fi (of which I do not always prefer), but it did not take long for my doubts to evaporate, and for my mind to be fully immersed in the story. The ideas Asimov poses are grand and worthy of thought long after the story ends, and his description of the characters' thoughts, feelings, and actions throughout the story lands the reader on familiar ground in such a fascinatingly crafted Reality. Asimov is expert in infecting readers with the very sense of Reality that takes place in Harlan's life. Sometimes I would flip back just to enjoy a mentioned moment again, and that in itself feels like time-travel, too (low-key think Asimov might have intended just that). By bringing the readers way out into what the future and fantastical might hold, Asimov somehow brings the readers right back home. Just as much as it is science-fiction, it is also a love story of life, of time, of philosophy, of romance. Finishing The End of Eternity so quickly has left me feeling like I just parted with a dear friend, that is how much I like this book.
TLDR: Read it in time. Small changes lurk in your perception of what science fiction is. My love for The End of Eternity is as wide as the many centuries within our Reality, and as close to home as a partner.

How Asimov thinks of impossibilities is startling. This is my 14th book by Asimov and all of them build up to the final extravaganza through a unsuspecting storyline, lacking any markings of a mindbending epic and yet the story explodes at the end and leaves you like a fool for doubting the author at any point.
There is a reason Asimov is one of the Giants of sci-fi and this book along with other equally highlight that.
This is on par with the foundation series at least.

Is this a metaphor for capitalism vs socialism? The Eternals representing the socialists who determine the safest course, the greater good for the greater number of people or the non-Eternals advocating for capitalism through struggle you get advances that socialists don't need to achive stability and happiness.

Honestly this held up way better than I would have expected for sci-fi from the 50s. I appreciated that the only meaningful female character, who at first seems like a one-dimensional sexual object, was actually much more complex and powerful than the whiny male protagonist, and that he underestimated her so greatly . The only thing that sometimes took me out of the story was the deeper philosophical exposition about time travel, which sometimes went on too long or got too complex for my enjoyment.
