I read this as another buddy read. While I still loved being in this universe and Scott's writing is great, this was definitely the weakest book in the series so far. It really felt like not much happened; they hiked into the city, travelled by train and then hiked some more. It was very much a book to get the story from where it was at the end of Shatter City to where it needs to be for the start of book four.
That cliffhanger though! It almost makes up for the rest of the book and I cannot wait to see what happens next in the next book. For once I'm going to have to wait though as the next book in this series isn't out yet.

It has been a minute since I read the other books in this series. I was concerned that I might not remember the characters and plot line. Obviously my concerns are unfounded. I forgot about Westerfield’s amazing talent in world building.
I did like the personality dynamics in this installment. I found some of the surprise twists to be a bit confusing - could be me. But not fully understanding them I was still able to complete this book.

Y'all besides dropping a fandom-loving surprise at the end of the novel, this is still not great. Mostly 200 pages of eye-glossing fight scenes. (The 92 pages where interesting things happen are good, and I wish we'd spent much more time in the palimpsest of Shreve instead of with our patricide-minded twins.)
Gotta be honest, I always think that the series is ending with each book until it ends on a cliffhanger and I have to wait another YEAR to see if it’s finally ending. Ugh Scott, really? I enjoyed this book but I feel like it should’ve actually been the end of the series…
The last line of this book is EVERYTHING!! This book broke my heart and exploded my brain all within minutes of each other!

so dang good i read all 600 pages in one day. you seriously get so lost in the entire world he describes. two words: THE ENDING!!!!! literally am dying to know when the final book will be coming. incredible incredible.
