Soo good. What we should be teaching in health classes across the country. Diet culture sucks.

2023 Edit: While this book was really helpful to me when I was initially getting myself out of diet culture, I no longer feel the author is someone who’s work I want to promote. There are many other books out there that will give you the same information as this one by people who are far less problematic. I still stand by this truly helping me so that’s why I haven’t changed the review to 1 star, but if you decide to read this, keep in mind that the author is not a good person.

This book has seriously changed my life and the way I think about food.

I spent the better part of a decade obsessing over dieting. I would constantly flip flip between extreme restriction and binging, spending my entire life absolutely hating myself because I didn’t have the will power to just stick with it.

A few months ago I decided I was done with that. I decided there was no way that constant stress and hatred over my body could be healthy. I decided to just stop focusing so much on weight and try to be healthy. Things were getting better but I was still feeling hatred towards myself for eating too much. That’s when I picked up this book. Dooner explains why our society views diets as “healthy”, how to escape that mindset yourself, then gives you a ton of tools to help with any residual negative feelings you have over food or your body.

The info in this book has just clicked with me, and my guess is a lot of the negative reviews didn’t finish the book or even try to implement the tools she gives you. If you’re looking for a way out of the constant cycle of self hatred our society promotes, this book is exactly what you need.

I would recommend this to anyone recovering from an eating disorder!

But for me, 3 stars only because I have done a lot of therapy so the last 1/4 of the book dragged. Took me weeks to finish after reading the first 3/4 in 2 days.

Others will definitely find the last 1/4 the most useful part, but I personally found it boring as I knew the concepts already.

Required Reading for All of Us

This book was a calming necessity in the storm of dieting disasters that our society has become. It helped me find my way back to myself. So so so good. Read and re-read.

Some good stuff here that can be applied to more than just food. I like that it addresses disordered eating as much as food itself. It might be a step too far here and there but there are things I’ll take away, particularly the writing prompts.

A compassionate, approachable refresher on health at every size and anti-diet principles.

I needed this book right now.

Since I’ve been on my food freedom and body neutrality journey since February, I’ve read and listened to a lot of advice on this topic. Overall I think this book is good. But I do think the author simplifies and down plays some aspects of this topic. But I still thought it was a great intro to food freedom!
