first book I’ve read in French completely, liked the storyline, did not like monsieur daldry, did like her, but please god why was like three quarters of the book just description of whatever the fuck was in the vicinity of them????? The story progressed soooo slowly because of that :(

I don't often read book thumbnails because I like going in blind. This book is proof of how you can come across the most precious little gems because if I had read the description, I don't entirely know if I would have read it. I do not love historical fiction, or historical romances. And to call this either one of those categories, well, it fits...but it doesn't nearly encompass it! Once the story got going, I really did not know where it was going to go. The story and the flow and the movement all worked so well. The characters felt a little bit like watching an old black and white film - which isn't a bad thing. I don't know how to describe it, except that there were parts to the story and the writing that were just magical. Images and scenes laid out so masterfully... I truly truly enjoyed this book and I was sad when it was over simple because it was over.

Very much of a old fashioned romance novel. Not to my taste.

good interesting read

And I don’t know if something got lost in translation here but I just did not at all caught why or how that ending happened I’m just very confused and really thought something completely different and cannot explain without spoiling which I won’t but how really? There never ever was a hint of romance between the main pair so not sure what to make of it and it was my fist time reading this author as well so will definitely try a different book book next

I really enjoyed this story of Alice’s journey to find her past. I think it was fairly predictable how the relationships connected at the end, but the development of the story was fun.

I didn’t really care for the audio narrator. She was a bit melodramatic.

#readingchallenge2023 (my extra books!)

A strange journey, from the novel I anticipated to the novel I read-

The beginning was promising- I initially enjoyed Alice’s imaginations, her vivaciousness, her quirkiness (the nose, the interactions w.her friends, etc), but I felt as the novel progressed where it may have seemed she was becoming stronger on her path, she was becoming weaker. There was a dullness; drudging on with predictability, leaving interactions feeling flat and inauthentic. Like the plot was trying to be more than it was, maintaining an air of mystery within the journey that wasn’t really there-

I wanted more structure surrounding the concept of the interesting people she was meant to uncover. The lack of this created the predictability & become honestly boring, since the curiosity was lackluster.

3.5 stars, an interesting read, to say the least. Marc Levy's books always have a unique bend to them.

An easy light read, enjoyed the characters and the story. Try not to read the blurb or reviews beforehand, better enjoyed without any preconceptions or potential spoilers.
