That was it? I NEED more!!!
I am pleased that there is a short story about The Darkling's past and I hope there would be more. His life was tragic. Living in an era were Grisha were in hunted down, always in hiding , moving from one place to another . His mother was ambitious, beautiful and ruthless but in this book we get to see more how much she really loves him.
He closed his eyes. "I`m sorry."
She gave him the barest shake, forcing him to look at her. "I'm not. Do you understand me? I would burn a thousand villages, sacrifice a thousand lives to keep you safe. It would be us on that pyre if you hadn`t thought quickly."
In the end he was just a boy who wanted to enjoy life, to make friends and leave a mark on the world before he leaves it.

It was interesting to see this side of the darkling but it didn’t do much for me

I think reading this novella directly after [b:Rule of Wolves|36307674|Rule of Wolves (King of Scars, #2)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1598133584l/36307674._SY75_.jpg|57978381] allowed for maximum emotional impact. I would not recommend this as an introduction to the Grishaverse, as I don’t think it has enough payoff for newcomers.
I’m not a Darkling stan, but I did empathize with “Eryk” here. I would have loved for this to have been longer. I would have loved just a bit more!

It wasn't a great story but I am for the Darkling and really hate how he was in the second book.
5/5
"Fear is a powerful ally, but feed it too often, make it too strong, and it will turn on you."
This was a great little addition to the Darkling's story, as an "origin" story of sorts for his intentions for the Grisha. I almost wish it had been included as some kind of flashback in one of the main books, as it would have further humanized the Darkling and perhaps have made me like him more...but probably not.
