I liked learning about The Darkling and how he was raised. I would have loved to see more, but it was enough as well.

tbh this was more fascinating than the novel. interesting little back story to Darkling!

"Your true name is written here," she said tapping his chest. "Tattooed on your heart. You don't let just anyone read it.”

Reading this short story about the Darkling after [b:Ruin and Rising|14061957|Ruin and Rising (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #3)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1392398530l/14061957._SX50_.jpg|19699754] hurts a lot more than it should.

Nice to have but not really necessary.

How the Darkling came to be. Well probably this is one of the reasons he has trust issues...

Huh, who would've imagined that the best story of this whole first Grisha series would be a short story about a young Darkling? Well, maybe the many fans he has, but not me.

And yet, here we are. At the main series, the Darkling had some development that suggested some of his past, and yet, for most of the time, he was either an all powerful, menacing figure... or a sad, lonely guy that did everything is his power to force the girl he liked to be with him - a stalker. Most of the hints of this sad past came either from himself or his mother, and on the latter, it could be him trying to manipulate Alina.

Now, with this story... I think I can kinda understand how the Darkling became what he was. Does it justify his acts? No. But at least it makes him a trully more nuanced, developed character.

Poor lil darkling, didn't deserve that. And ik he meant good

Before he claimed that title he was just a boy.
The Darkling is one of my favorite characters and he stayed it until the end. The past of our favorite villain turned out to be not what I expected and it left me with the need to learn more about him. How he created the Shadow Fold and what he experienced throughout all those years he's been alive.

I mean, it was fine. I knew from ruin and rising that Eryk had some shit go down in his past to make him the way he is, I feel like I didn’t need this origin story, I would have rather had the making of the fold story vs this. I feel like I could ascertain the general message from book 3 and didn’t necessarily need this. Still looking forward to reading the other in between stories from the trilogy.

I loved getting an inner look to the Darkling's childhood. I actually felt really bad for him and how he and his mother changed identities and where they lived all the time. What he goes through in nearly heartbreaking! It really works for the 'sympathy for the devil' idea. His mother is so cold in this. ANd what she expected of him....grrr. She really did have a lot to atone for.
