"He understood then. The Grisha lived as shadows did, passing over the surface of the world, touching nothing, forced to change their shapes and hide in corners, driven by fear as shadows were driven by the sun. No safe place. No haven.

There will be, he promised in the darkness, new words written upon his heart. I will make one.
"

This is heartbreaking. I can't really say anything else besides you just break for The Darkling more than you did before.

I absolutely loved this little insight in the darklings past. He was one of my favourite characters in Shadow and Bone and this brief glimpse into his past - can we get a longer version of this pretty please cause you can't just give us this and expect us to not want more - made me understand his character a little better.

As he is an amplifier everyone who realises it wants to use him for themselves - being greedy for more power and being overpowered by said greed - and the moment between the darkling and the other two young grisha is the breaking point for him to fully embrace his power. Maybe that's even the point where he himself started to succumb to the greed for more power. All in all a beautiful little glimpse into the "baby darklings" life.

What a lovely little spooky terrifying piece of Grishaverse history <3

i always had a weak spot for the darkling, but i only discovered when i couldn't stop crying at his death
he was just a damaged boy, just like all other villains are, and this little book shows that

I liked it so much!! this short story helps to understand why the darkling became like this (and his mother too)! it does not excuse what he has become, but it explains it

Another great twist of a short story by Bardugo. This time she takes on a major character before we knew him. A must for fans!

"I would burn a thousand villages, sacrifice a thousand lives to keep you safe".

An interesting short story that captivated me since the beginning. It starts with the Grisha, also known as witches, that have powers to control three different elements. A woman and his son arrive to a camp with a different identity to be as invisible as possible.

Erik meets Annika, a girl with a weak power. Erik finds himself trapped in Annika's greed, but thanks to his powers, he's able to get out and run away.

Every character has a well defined personality that can be told apart from each other and it was so interesting I couldn't put it down, it was just enough to make the reader want to read more of the Grishaverse.

Creepy and wonderful.

I am on Chapter 6 of the first book and saw that this one was a sort of prequel novella for 99 cents. Thought I'd check it out and give it a quick read. Cautiously, though, I suppose. I didn't want to ruin anything for the rest of the series. One main thing revealed was already spoken about from where I was at in the main book. Not a bad story though! I like the writing style. It flows really well. Some parts I saw the situation going a different direction, but didn't end in a bad direction as far as enthralling storytelling. It is a nice addition to the world of the Grisha trilogy.

Short story at the end of book #3 about the Darkling’s childhood.
