Very good story! To see where the dark long came from and why he tried to keep that promise, it makes me even more sad that Alina betrayed him in the end. I wish he could have found love and happiness.

No matter what sympathy this story brings, I still hate the Darkling's guts.

Not that good...

This was an interesting story. I loved it but it just wasn’t long enough. If they wanted to do an entire book on the Darkling on how he became the Darkling I would def read that!

I loved the insight into the Darkling and the background on him. I wish they’d given his name or something but meh. It was meh.

just a short story about the darkling. interesting to read and gave a little more into his backstory. worth it if you enjoyed the grisha trilogy and the darkling as a character.

Give me more!! :)

I miss the Grishaverse so much now. I can't wait to get back to it by reading the six of crow series!

This story is my favorite novella so far and I loved seeing some of the other powers and how they work. (I found them a little confusing at times when I was reading the books.)

The Demon in the Wood, is more than just the origins of the Darkling, it is about the Grisha and how they live. They are a people, a desperate people who will do anything to survive. It's a chilling harsh fact that lies as a heavy burden upon their children, that ultimately shapes the Darkling into what we see in The Grisha trilogy.

Before that here is my Shadow & Bone review referencing The Demon in The Woods :

It is a short and impactful look on The Darkling as a child. What happened to him, can't really blame him for becoming that way. You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself becoming the villain.
