Who would have thought that you would catch me feeling sorry for the Darkling in the year of our Lord 2021?! Not me anyway but here we bloody well are!
I didn’t realise that this was going to be a novella about the Darkling until I read the authors note at the beginning and my interest was immediately grabbed. Part of me did wonder what exactly made the Darkling the Darkling and what happened to him in his past that would explain what he gets up to in the future.
Well, here are your answers.
Did this actually make me feel sorry for him? A little bit yeah, it did. You can feel how desperate he is to just settle down in one place and then to have the safety of the camp taken away by the desperation and greed of two other children is heartbreaking. But it’s so well written. And really helps to set up the Grishaverse trilogy as well.

The Darkling is still one of my favorite villains ever.
Creo que me gustó más esta historia corta, si la vengo a comparar con el resto de la trilogía. Te deja esa sensación de angustia, pena, pesar y lo que es sentirse completamente sólo. Saber que ni entre los tuyos (o en este caso, los mismos Grisha) se esté a salvo. La avaricia del hombre siempre será su condena.

This is my first time reading anything by Leigh Bardugo and wow, that was a nice one. By now I know most of the spoilers of the Grishaverse books, but I didn’t know I was reading Darkling’s early days until I realized the POV character, Eryk, was a shadow summoner.

So far, so good.
I’ll be heading for The Witch of the Duva now. Yup, I’m going from #0.1 book to #0.5 now. Hopefully Leigh Bardugo will my next favorite author 😊😊

I loved this short novella, it was amazing to see the Darkling as a child and quite innocent at this time! It made me think a bit differently about him, it made me sad to think that he was a nice, quiet, harmless child, but as an adult the darkness and power overtook him.
The Darkling is my favourite villain. I always knew that he wasn't truly evil, but this story helps to understand him a little better. I am really glad that I have read this.
