Actually really enjoyed this little piece of Darkling-backstory.
This was a very interesting story. I liked poor Eryk. I can't imagine a world where you have to constantly move in fear of both none Grisha and Grisha a like.
I was saddened that Annika betrated Eryk and horrified at how quickly both she and Lev were willing to kill him to get his amplification power. I don't know why the amplifier has to be dead but I'm sad that they do.
I wonder if that's how his father died? Did someone kill him for this power?

2021 Winter (February);
2021 Grishaverse Show Prep Read/Reread in preparation for the tv show dropping in late April 2021. I totally still agree with the little bit I read before, and it was very much retracing steps for someone who rarely does a reread, but I still love meeting The Darkling as a child, and seeing how rare/dangerous his family's gift is.
2016;
This whole series is going to be rated in fives. I hope you are ready.
I am starting to fall in deep love with [a:Leigh Bardugo|4575289|Leigh Bardugo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1534446099p2/4575289.jpg] and I need to read everything she has after reading this one and [b:The Tailor|17997353|The Tailor (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy, #1.5)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1369842991l/17997353._SX50_.jpg|25254362] after finished book one and the folktales. I am so moved and so heart wrenched by this inside like at The Darklings' childhood, his mother, the glimpse at where their people were before everything changed (previous to the main story).

it wasn’t bad. we learned more about the darklings childhood and we've seen how close him and baghra used to be
it showed that even the most ruthless villain was still once good and just a little kid. back then he only wanted the best for the grisha and to protect them, which is the reason for him later on to become the darkling
i think what was missing is how the darkling changed after this short story. i would've liked to see more about how he became the darkling and created the fold etc
still none of this excuses his actions and i will forever be a darkling hater which is probably why i didn’t give it four stars

A very tiny snippet of the darkling in his youth. I wanted more.
Nothing truly revolutionary in this story. You get a brief glimpse of the Darkling before he was the Darkling, a sort of explanation of the genesis of the Second Army and his desire for safety for the Grisha in a more visceral way. It didn't actually make me like the Darkling any better--I find him to be the single least likable character of the entire series--and I didn't think it did anything to justify his later behaviour, but it was still an interesting read. (My copy also included an excerpt from Six of Crows, which was by far my favourite part.
