Demonic indeed. A very short story that was added as a bonus at the end of RUIN AND RISING, this was a dark one. I figured that a prequel revolving around the Darkling would be unpleasant, but... yeesh. It was really well written and painted him as a more sympathetic child, even hinted at the kind of emotional connection that could have changed his path in life, and then the twist at the centre of the story came, and it all became dark from there. Still, it was an engaging quick read, and I enjoyed the little tease into the Darkling's past.
