This was originally intended to be our March book club selection, so I read it to keep on track, even as I began to realize our originally scheduled time would have to be delayed. We paused our meetings for several months, only recently feeling there was a window to safely meet while socially distanced outside.

Sheldon, an octogenarian, finds himself relocating from the United States to Norway to live with his granddaughter. If that wasn't enough of an adjustment, there are concerns of possible dementia. He witnesses a murder and finds himself eluding the authorities with a young boy in tow. Various characters carry the story, as events converge, and flashbacks add an additional dynamic.

Themes of family, war, aging, grief, and more led to a thoughtful conversation in my book club. I found this to naturally flow, even as the subject matter could be serious or tense.

A lot of story is crammed into this book which I liked. . Lots of wit and some interesting insights as well. Basically it was a refreshing combination of suspense and whimsy.

Pacy, intelligent, well written thriller. A good debut, and I'll look forward to his next ones.

I enjoyed this book, in fact, most of it was really great. The main character was very interesting and complex (sometimes too much so). Some other reviewers have mentioned that it can be confusing following his "real time" action and his past but it really wasn't hard to follow. The only part that was wasn't great for me was the ending. It seemed like it came together all of a sudden and then was done. I would have liked to known what happened next and had a little more explanation of how it all wrapped up. Also would have liked to have known more about the bad guy. Never could figure out his intentions with his son. Overall, a good book. One more thing, I almost didn't read this book because some reviewers mentioned how it made them so weepy...not something I enjoy in a book. Anyway, I didn't get that feeling at all...maybe I missed it but it wasn't a tearjerker for me.

Norwegian by Night is humorous and sweet, melancholy and tragic, fast-paced and thrilling. Derek B. Miller masterfully navigates this third-person narrative told from alternating points of view, presenting at one time a novel that's both personal and political. The weight of history—family history, national history, religious history—weighs on every character, informs every action. The pride and loneliness of people who are forced to wander, the way they carry their stories and the stories of the people they love, are at the center of this beautiful novel. I long to tell you more, but I don't want to spoil it. Miller has done such a terrific job at revealing details that move the story forward at just the right moments that to know too much could spoil the pleasure in turning the page. I had a tough time putting it down, and I hope that you will, too. You can read my full review here: http://wp.me/pg3go-Jm

enjoyed this book immensely. Donnie Horowitz is a fantastic old marine and a great character. Would definitely recommend, although the bad guys were a little 2-dimentional.

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one the oldest selection on my TBR list - Originally added February 16, 2017.

I had high expectations about this book. Maybe too high because I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. To me, it was too much war story and not enough crime drama.
