Gidion the Ninth

I had a lot of fun reading Gideon the Ninth. I really loved Gideon as a character. Her dumb jokes and straight forward thinking made her very likable to me. I also adore a good enemies to I-don't-really-know-what-this-is-lovers? story especially if i'ts childhood enemies and especially if it's saphic.

The fantasy aspect of the book was interesting and I loved the mystery of it. The story was a bit gory but I don't mind that at all. I like it a bit bloody and disturbing but I can see how that is not for everyone.

The book loses points for me becaus of the ending. I am just not sur what I am suposed to do with it.
It kinda intreagues to read the next book but for me one of the most appealing part of the book was Gideon herself, so after her death I don't know how much fun I am going to have with the next books.
So 4.25 it is, I am still going to read the next books tho, I plan on it anyway.

Practically a perfect book. I both wish I had the finess and talent to write this, and wish that I could erase it from my memory to experience for the first time again. <The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the ending DESTROYED me and I was so upset. Have high hopes for the rest of the series though. Edit: upon review, and after reading Harrow the Ninth, it absolutely gets 5 stars :).>

The writing feels a lot like Douglas Adams’  but with more gore and death and less aliens.

I’m not sure what exactly makes it science-fiction though?? I know they’re like in space and travelling from planet to planet but it still seems like an afterthought to me, even with the futuristic Earth theory. Unless it’ll be more explored in the next books? idk. I didn’t feel like the world building was thrown in my face like other fantasy/sci fi books so it was easy to understand for me.

Overall, I loved the book until the end action scene. I found it was unnecessarily long and made finishing the book so much more unpleasant. I do love the lesbians though. Don’t know what the fuck happened at the end there, but I think
there’s no way that Gideon will stay stuck inside Harrow (ha ha sex joke).

I loved listening to the audiobook version of this book! The mysteries were dark and intense, and the action would keep you on the edge of your metaphorical seat. The writing style is very fitting to the characters and at times added a little laugh when it got really dire. The ending was amazing and emotional, and I’m already eager to read the sequel!

This ended up being much more of a slog to get through than it should have been. It wasn't until the last 100 pages that I was interested enough to want to keep reading. I found myself not reading some days, because I just did not want to pick this book up, and I was quite close to DNF-ing.

Firstly, this is advertised right on the front cover as, "lesbian necromancers in space". I do feel this a little misleading. The only "confirmed" lesbian character (who could also be argued as bi based on mutliple comments they make throughout the book) is not a necromancer. The story then mostly takes place on Earth, so we're hard pressed to actually have the space vibes that were promised.

For the first 200 pages of this book nothing happens. It mostly consists of our MC, Gideon, walking down hallways, checking out abandoned rooms, and eating food. She isn't allowed to talk to the other people that are there either, so this whole chunk of story is pretty much just urban exploring.

When the plot finally starts to get rolling it still doesn't take off like I thought it would. The main meat of this book happens in the last 40 pages, and the ending just kind of left me feeling like the entire thing was pointless. This is a series, but I just cannot see myself wanting to pick up the next book.

The relationship between the two MCs, Gideon and Harrow, is exceptionally complicated, which does provide some intrigue as we want to see if they can work together. However, their attitudes towards each other shift so drastically in just one scene that it ends up being a bit off-putting. The way the rest of the characters interact with our MCs is just fine though.

The best thing in this book are by far the fight scenes. Unfortunately, they are few and far between, but they really do shine. Overall, I just feel like this story didn't deliver what it was offering.

This is like nothing I’ve ever read and I loved it. The universe is rich and dark; it’s wonderfully detailed but you learn it - or the relevant part of it - by living it alongside the cast, not through big info dumps, though I did enjoy the extra material at the end of this edition. There’s satisfying mystery, great jokes, development of character and relationships, both magical action and great swordplay, and a cast of major players I came to love. It’s also got a lot of necromantic body horror and it presents the queerness of its major characters as just who they are, though it’s not a romance, even as it has elements of regency honour and romantic ideals. The mash of styles encompasses Game of Thrones, Warhammer 40,000, Pride and Prejudice, Tank Girl and Gormenghast. Frankly it’s the best new thing I’ve read in ages, and I hope you love it as much as I did. Looking forward to the sequels!
