This book wasn't for me. It felt really heavy-handed, there was kind of a rush to the end, and the wrap up wasn't satisfying.
there's a strongly established 200yr precedent of subjugation, oppression, and abuse of women - and all queer people, it seems - and the one sentence or so of "we changed everything immediately and fought and drove out everyone who objected" is supposed to reconcile that? Including for folks who are in active DV situations?  Not only is it disingenuous, the suspension of disbelief is impossible for me.  But maybe that's the actual fairy tale.

What if the Cinderella story we all know and love became a prison sentence for women?  Men can do whatever they want with the women in town, without fear of repercussions.  Women are measured against the perfect Cinderella, with balls for men to make bids and claims for women.  Anyone different (like anyone gay) have to hide who they are and accept their fate.

Except Sophia refuses to do this.  She runs from the ball and becomes an outcast, and eventually works to overthrow the king.

This book is an adventure, a sapphic slow burn, beautifully written with tough topics addressed.  Sophia is sassy, knows what she wants, and is exactly who this place needs at this time.  She remains a character I love and revisiting the book feels like greeting an old friend for whom you can't stop rooting.

I really wanted to like this book.

It tries to be everything at once and fails to do so. On one hand there’s simply too much and a lot of stuff is mentioned as important only to never be mentioned again, while on the other hand there’s actually very little that happens and all the characters seem to say every single thought out loud without any filters. Everything else is explained in every single detail and I found I was able to predict the story from the get go and had to wait over 200 pages before mc did…

I really don’t know why I finished it. I think I hoped that it would become more but it never did.

An excellent retelling of Cinderella from the point of view of a sapphic poc. Predictable at times but still a delightful read.

This was great. I had read lots of mixed reviews, so I wasn’t sure going in if I would like this. This is my fourth book by Bayron and it might even be my fave. If you’re in the mood for a standalone YA dystopian fantasy about taking down the patriarchy with sapphic romance all wrapped up in a retelling, then I would recommend this.
CW misogyny, homophobia, lots of violence against women.
