Reading the synopsis, Requiem for a Dream is right up my alley, character focused, introspective, and emotional. You can now understand my disappointment when I found myself detached and losing interest too often throughout my listening experience.
I can appreciate the characters and their story, I wanted to shake Sarah awake and help her realise her worth is more than her weight or a damn tv show. I wanted more for each of these characters, more than a drug addicted life but for me, this care can only go so far. It's hard to root for characters who provide little hope...
Kudos to the narrator for bringing this book to life, a 10/10 execution. If it wasn't for the narrator engaging my interest, I'm not sure I would have continued this book much past the first quarter.
Being originally published in 1978, perhaps time and relatability impacted my reading experience.
Not.a bad book, just not for me.
1 star for the narrator, 1 star for the characters, especially Sarah.
Thank you to the published for allowing me to access this audiobook early.

Dont do drugs kids :)

i gave up… the writing is very hard to read!!! all the slang and stuff.. i think, the film is way too better. the book is just way too hard to read!! also, has typos not made by accident. pisses me off. the annotation sounded so very cool, but in fact, i just didn’t understand what was going on.. WHAT was going on???? bland and boring, made me feel uncomfortable and confused. not my cup of tea.
The Steeam-of-Conciousness style and the way it jumped from the thoughts of 1 character to the thoughts of another character, mid-thought, made it too hard to follow.

Incredibly powerful story that touches on so many important issues. Addiction, mental health issues, how they're viewed and the lack of appropriate support for them was one thing. Using no quotation marks/paragraph breaks for dialogue took some getting used to, but eventually led to an incredible tool to demonstrate desperation and racing thoughts.
Absolutely worth the read, but extremely unpleasant to do so.
