still owns. theres a whole borgesian passage in the middle to win a jaded and poorly educated heart. this is the book i wanted to read when i was ten
A tale of platonic love and community belonging, steeped in magical realism & mythology. When Finn's brother's girlfriend Roza mysteriously disappears, he's the only witness to the kidnapping - but he's unable to describe the assailant's face, and nobody believes him.
I loved the writing style: snappy dialogue & pacing, a constant sense of movement despite taking place in a sleepy midwestern town. Certain side characters didn't seem quite real, bordering on caricature or fairytale archetypes - and I mean this in a good way - it felt very intentional.
The main characters' interpersonal tensions and insecurities were believable, and the magical realism had clear analogues to real-world issues. I also appreciated the lack of a bullshit love triangle (those are my own pet peeve, I suppose).

The writing was fine, but the story just wasn’t that engaging. I didn’t get invested in any of the characters or figuring out the magic.
It was kind of weird how much the face blindness was tied into the magic. I guess it’s a commentary on how people get caught up with how something appears? Didn’t seem as developed as it could have been.

This was cute af. It was a fast, smooth read. I think I liked the characters more than the actual story, but I don’t think that’s a negative at all!
I'm not totally sure how to describe or review this book. I'll start by saying its probably the best book I've read this year, or at least among my top 3.
This is gorgeous, absolutely wonderful magical realism. With threads of greek mythology, namely the stories of Persephone and Orpheus, it managed to avoid becoming a retelling, just maintained some thematic elements from these stories. Really it was just full of these wonderful, mythological, dreamy, and at times fairytale-esque undertones, while still keeping you well grounded in the town of Bone Gap.
I just- I can't really gush enough. I just want to use adjectives, because I can't actually figure out how to describe the ambiance and plot without giving a whole lot away. Dreamy, pretty, devastating, unique, interesting, touching... I love this book. I love this book.

There were a little too many metaphors (Bees, corn, growing, horses and on and on) such that they started clashing with each other, but who cares?
I haven't read such an uplifting and empowering YA in so long. It's everything I need. It's everything my future children need.
I'm just, amazed, really.
