Do you read the synopsis of a book already on your tbr?
I don't and in this case I didn't.
That's why after the first half of the book I still wasn't sure what genre I was reading.
The writing style kept me fascinated though, with characters so complete ( most of them anyway).

I loved the first part of the book and I thought the storyline was awesome but the execution was HORRIBLE. I hated the ending and the last couple chapters leading up to the ending. The book felt rushed to me.
Amazing book with small-town setting and a just a touch of magic.
Explores face blindness and beauty with Finn, a likeable character.
Reading it for the second time had me more focused on Rosa's storyline. It was something like a retelling of the Persephone or Orpheus story with her. I like that it's left vague so you can interpret it yourself.

I understand that this is not for me and because of that am very intrigued by the book's attempts to introduce surrealism to younger readers in a way that would still be digestible to them. Despite this, its flaws made it difficult for me to enjoy the text as a read that can critically analyze them. The way the text treats Finn's face blindness as a plot device both in his relationship with Petey and his ability to find Roza felt a little gross and made it more of a plot contrivance than something which was explored with emotional depth. I think the treatment of the queer character was similarly uncomfortable, though minor. Despite these flaws the book was very interesting, I just am unsure whether a young person would find it had achieved its goal.
This didn't deserve it's Printz Award. The book is an okay plot: random girl that just appeared in a small town gets kidnapped, the kid who saw her get kidnapped can't describe him, then the same already troubled kid is filled with guilt and grief. Too bad that the plot is covered with one dimensional characters who all have one complicated event that turns them into either a mean or sad mess. Also, the writing is not impressive. The climax and resolution was way too fantasy-like for a book that shouldn't be classified as fantasy and it was forced. I did not hate but you probably couldn't pay me to listen to it again.
Excellent -true beauty comes from within and do not settle for less than equal partnerships!
