I read BONE GAP after it was strong recommended to me by someone at nEDrdcampMI earlier this year. Loved it, especially the voice. Disturbing, mysterious and thought-provoking.

This book has everything: cunnilingus, twists, bees. Absolutely recommend.

A troubling, but sweet story. There's evil, but true love, as well. And some thoughts on beauty that I loved.

3.5 stars, this book took forever to get going for me, I was more than halfway through before I was hooked. Then it got good for a while, BUT then it took a "Twin Peaks" season two turn that just wasn't pulled off for me. The description of this book sounded great, and I like the writing well enough, the characters were interesting enough. I just couldn't get on board with this one, despite the generally good reviews. I didn't hate it, it just didn't grab me by the throat like I was hoping it would.

Deliciously dreamy, sometimes sexy and mostly a magical mystery. I found it to be bit of a slow burn, but characters were unique and the story intriguing.

A sleepy town with a lot of gaps between the spaces of reality where one thing may phase into the other. I enjoyed this writing style immensely, it was nice and lyrical. The main characters were very endearing, both Roza and Finn were excellent protagonists. I liked how the mystery unraveled over time around how Roza got to Bone Gap and how Finn's character developed to understand himself more.

I think the magical realism was the weakest element, even if it started nicely. Everything in between could have been written off as a grand adventure of life like the horse and the night time rides.

"Scarecrows weren't made to scare the crows, they were made to scare the corn. It was enough to give a person nightmares. Otherwise, why would so many horror movies have cornfields in them."

"Roza laughed, a loud, happy sound too big for her body. 'I cook for me. You get what's left'"

"Goat, this is Horse. Horse, this is Goat. I'm still working on your names, but that's all I got for now."

Roza being disarmed by the professor is so real, thinking they are safe because the man has a family oof

"'People have gone to war over a beautiful woman. Why not move heaven and earth for one?'

'Because I don't want that!'"

I really love that she decided to ruin her beauty with the gnarly scar.
"Sean finished twenty of the smallest, neatest, most careful stitches his big fingers could manage, would ever manage."

Finn having facial blindness was an interesting character trait and was nicely built up! Petey being the one to piece it together but they work through it was also a nice plot beat.

"He had some sort of crazy disease and Petey was talking about being ugly after he'd been coming for her every night, because he couldn't stand to be away from her, and she was throwing papers and books at him as if it proved something about her, and not about him".

This book swept me away in a torrent of love, loss and acceptance. Bone Gap is the epitome of magical realism, blending our world with elements of magic and surrealism.

The plot of this novel was so interesting. Watching the affects of Rozas diss appearance on the town as well slowly seeing this other realm unravel around her. We see Finn’s inward battles and he’s trying to make sense of this strange situation

The setting of this novel was flawless. I loved the small American town laced with magic, I loved the tiny polish village filled with rolling hills that Rosa looks back on. And I found the world building for this other realm so intriguing. This novel blends reality with fantasy so beautifully it will leave you wanting to run through cornfields

The characters in this novel were so intricate and different to what I’m used to. I loved the representation of different culture and perceptions from Rozas side. I equally loved the discussion of face blindness with Finn. However this novel and its characters discuss and go through some harrowing things so please check TW’s.

Where this book lacked a bit for me was the writing style. I found it a bit simplistic for my taste but overall I will still continue to recommend this novel
