Reading about rich people being awful to each other is not my favorite thing. Even if it is being presented as satire of Regency Society. There's no one I could remotely like in this book.
It took me nine months to read this damn thing. They didn't believe in brevity back in the 1800s.
For the first half of the book, it feels like Thackeray is determined to remind you that his characters have no redeeming values (making the idea of reading 800 pages about them rather dull). He seems to nearly forget this in the second half, and becomes more absorbed in the story of his characters. A long, relatively easy read. This reminded me - in the manner of opposite approaches - of Louisa May Alcott's work - my preference being for Louisa May Alcott.

I liked the narrative style of Vanity Fair and in places the plot went at quite a pace but on the whole it was a slow book. It is a good story and I felt frustrated with some of the characters in a way I wouldn’t if I’d not been invested in the story. But it was long. I am glad I’ve read it though.

I've been sorely negligent in writing this review - finished this book a couple days ago and just haven't gotten around to it! I first read this in high school and didn't like it much - Becky was hard to relate to. She's still hard to relate to (after all, they do say this is a novel without a hero!) but I can appreciate it on a whole new level. And in a weird way, it reflects a lot of the world around us today. (not being a pessimist, just a realist). We all know people who are just like the characters in this book, you learn to live with them, and honestly, there is good to be found in most of them ;-)
