Such a super cute read. Very much spoke to my Kdrama obsessed heart (but I've only seen two of the ones that were mentioned in this book so I need to get back to bingeing)! A lot of "don't try this at home" antics occurred but it was a very entertaining and fun read.
I know the formulaic K drama plot is literally the backbone of this particular story, but if you’re gonna follow such a rigid framework, it should feel less forced. It was cute, but I wanted more depth.
(Also, some of these “””cutesy””” stunts she pulls are just ridiculous. She orchestrates a literal car wreck, and we’re supposed to just be cool with that? I think the hell not.)

After some reflection, I have decided to lower my rating from a 3* to a 2*.
Unfortunately this book was entirely the wrong fit for me. I feel like I would've gelled with this better had I read this in my early teens; but unfortunately it just wasn't the right fit for me at this time. I liked the sound of the premise, but unfortunately the way it was executed just didn't hold up to my expectations. Whilst it was written well and, at times, was very charming it just didn't hold my attention well enough and the characters held a massive amount of juvenile mannerisms which knocked the story down a peg (or three) for me.
This story, however, does earn a lot of brownie points for having an immensely diverse cast of characters. I also loved the cultural exploration weaved throughout the plot. It also has an impeccable family relationship (particularly father/daughter) and it is utterly charming and lovely to read. The family relationships were what I loved the most about this story and what urged me to continue reading because I was desperate for further doses of the characters that I had warmed up to so rapidly.
Unfortunately the romance wasn't for me. There were a lot of issues throughout and it just made me uncomfortable a few times; particularly when Desi went to a party with another guy to make her 'target' envious. It just made me squirm and I had to flick through a few pages. Maybe that's the British person in me and my distaste for secondhand embarrassment! Ha! But I didn't really like the way the romance was pursued and the other relationships in this book really do overtake the romance which definitely was a plus for me.
The book was written well even though it was a little tedious to get through in places. It was well crafted and the majority of the characters were a joy to read about. My favourite character being Desi's father, of course, who I absolutely adored. I loved seeing a male k-drama fan and how happy they made him; it was a fabulous twist on females constantly being the focus of fandom etc., and it was brilliant to see the positive effect that k-dramas have on people and how amazing they can be. I definitely think it's important to highlight the positives behind alternative media and normalise the idea that people find comfort in things that are seen as less conventional. I thought it was a fabulous angle for the story to take and it was fun, amusing and fascinating to read about and it was without a doubt my favourite element of the story.
This book does tangle with a few more serious topics, but they aren't overbearing and don't bring the mood of the book down. Overall the book is funny (thanks to Desi's Dad), charming and a fun read. Really disappointed that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted/expected to! But I would still recommend if the premise appeals to you.

This had super cute moments and reminded me of a k-drama. On that note, my kdrama heart loved it and made me want to binge some dramas.
HOWEVER... with the main characters' behavior... I do not know if I was rooting for the couple half of the time. I was constantly calling Desi an idiot and wondering how she could do that. (Though I have done that with kdramas too sometimes.)
It was obvious that everything she did was going to come back to bite her in the ass. I also wish she would have admitted she fucked up. I don't think she ever properly apologized. Just gave excuses.

I Believe in a Thing called Love is a contemporary following a Korean American girl name Desi. Desi thinks that anything is possible when you have a plan. She is very smart academically and also on the schools varsity soccer team and has her eye on Stanford University. However, the one thing she is not good at is romance and is always embarrassing herself in front of her crushes. She then has an idea. Her father is obsessed with K-Dramas and the main characters always have a happy ending in love. She decides to watch them and come up with a plan on how to make someone fall for you.
Here is the thing, I found this book to be very cute but the main character can be annoying and does make dumb decisions here and there. You want to scream at the book at her not to do something, but she does it anyway even if it is clearly not a good idea since in a certain way it is completing a step in the K-Drama formula. Other than that I really liked it.
The main character, again is Korean American and it did have Korean culture integrated in the story, but not in a forceful way.
I personally do not care much about K Dramas but I am pretty sure if you like them then you will love this book. There is a K-Drama guide in the back as well if you are interested in watching one and you do not know where to start.
I love the father daughter relationship in the book and how important each of them is to each other and how they care for one another. I love how the parents are not mysteriously absent in this book like a lot of YA stories.
Overall I did like this book but it is not my favorite. It is very ridiculous at times, but it still made me smile a lot when reading and I would recommend it.

Fun and cozy read--Desi reminds me way too much of myself at her age, though I had less drive--that evokes classic K-dramas.
A solid and enjoyable YA romance novel, it's funny in parts and has a fantastic protagonist in type-A Desi. The ending is a bit rushed and the resolutions to various issues/points are only touched upon in the epilogue, but its focus on Kdramas and a hyperorganised heroine make it a fun, thoroughly enjoyable book.
