EDITED: I have now since watched several K Dramas thanks to the guide in the back of the book and now have a better appreciation for the hijinx Desi participated in.
—————————————————
One time, I tried to watch a K Drama and after the first episode I said, “nope...can’t do this. It’s too crazy and unrealistic and dramatic and CRAZY.” That, my friends, I ALMOST EXACTLY how this book was.
Let me preface.... I did really like this story, but it was slightly problematic, which was why I docked a star.
I loved the characters, main and supporting, but Desi...well, I genuinely felt she was off her rocker for AT LEAST the first 25-40% of the book. I get it...I get it...it’s supposed to be similar to a K Drama....after all Desi is following a timeline she created to secure love by WATCHING MULTIPLE K DRAMAS. But some of her actions are so manipulative ().
The redeeming part to Desi’s crazy (which is somewhat endearing as the story and relationship progresses) is Luca and his ability to stand up for himself and call her out on how manipulative it was. I mean, my heart broke during that part of the book, because I was heavily invested into their story, but YES! I’m so glad he didn’t just brush it off as okay. Because it was so not okay.
Basically, I enjoyed the book because despite how unrealistic it seemed, it ended up being very real life and threw the readers and Desi into the reality of book/tv/movie tropes not being healthy or realistic. With solid characters and an actual swoony love story, this book does capture your heart. And also, makes you want to give K Dramas another go (thank goodness for the K Drama guide in the back of the book!). I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants something lighthearted and cheesy!

Purposely causing a car accident AND fake drowning herself which results in Luca’s actual drowning?!?!The redeeming part to Desi’s crazy (which is somewhat endearing as the story and relationship progresses) is Luca and his ability to stand up for himself and call her out on how manipulative it was. I actually loved so much about this book, the writing and characters, and it was such an easy read. But some of the stuff desi did to try to get this guy to like her was so bad shit crazy town, I just cannot condone that kind of behavior. It went way past “quirky romantic” and straight into insane and manipulative. And then she got forgiven for it all wayyy to fast. I always knew it was all gonna end with a ~happily ever after~ but honestly part of me was hoping it wouldn’t.
I'm not gonna lie, I thought this was really cute. But it was also excruciatingly predictable which, from a YA contemporary romance, is expected. But still...
The romance was cute, but I never felt much chemistry between the two love interests, and they seemed like the kind of people who wouldn't be associated with each other in real life. I don't really understand Desi's urgency to get a boyfriend; it was like she needed to be perfect in everything. She was amazing at so many things and has a great future ahead of her but she still focused on how she couldn't get a boyfriend? I would've thought getting into Stanford would've been her top priority in senior year, not romance? She also did a bunch of crazy things in order to score a hot boyfriend. But I did find the K drama steps were funny and a cute, unique feature to have. Also, the fall out in the end was extremely predictable and avoidable. It felt like it was added in to add a bit of drama before they ultimately ended up together.
I did find the main character adorable and entertaining in some sense, especially in the first half and her 'flailings', and her two best friends were really entertaining too. I did also love the cute family relationship between her dad, and the subtle hints of Korean culture were interesting and I did enjoy that. But overall the romance aspect was a flop, and seeing as that was the majority of the story line, I can't rate it well. I think 3 stars might be generous, but I did still find it entertaining to an extent.

such as, have nails on the road so his tyre can burst and they crash, or even worse, fake drowning (when you're a trained lifeguard) for him to rescue you, but nearly killed him by doing so as he couldn't swim!I did find the main character adorable and entertaining in some sense, especially in the first half and her 'flailings', and her two best friends were really entertaining too. “Everything reminding me of him: ramen, pencils, T-shirts, ice, my house, the Buick, my bed, trains, morning glories, the ocean, breathing.”
I had fun with this. Although yes, much of what Desi was trying to do in this story was batshit insane. I’m specifically pointing to getting into a car accident on purpose. That could have gone totally wrong. Still, keeping in mind this was more of a romantic comedy, it was fun to read along. I think it was one of my favorite Maurene Goo books that I’ve read so far. I particularly liked Desi’s relationship with her father; it was a well-written relationship. I thought it was cute that each headline matched up with the K-Drama list that she made; that made me excited to read each chapter to see how it connected to her list. Again, as I’m finding in a lot of YA books, it was hard to read when Desi’s chose to go to Luca’s aid instead of her college interview. At the same time, that might have been something I would have done if I were in her position as well. Overall, had a fun time with this.
