A bloated fantasy soap opera with a touch of politics.
The soap opera elements I couldn't get into, because the characters fall instantly in love before even meeting. I'm sure others will enjoy that, but I sure didn't. I like the meet cute, the build up, the realistic fights, all that junk that should go into a romance. My impression of instant love is that most people call it "lust" and not "love". It takes time to change from complete strangers to being in love.
The politics, after reading something like Game of Thrones, are very simple and don't quite feel realistic to me. Not only that, but we are told the good guys plan at least 3 times, as if we are expected to have forgotten it after 5 pages.
It's bloated. SO bloated. Someone needs to take a cleaver and cut off about 50% of the length because most of the writing doesn't add much. The first 2 chapters are rather precisely written and move the story along nicely, but after that the story starts going into a holding pattern with changes happening very slowly and information being repeated over and over. The novel clocks in at 574 pages, but would have been much better at 300 pages. It's not as if the romance and politics are complicated and need to be belabored.

Finding this very boring. The mixed POV without revealing all the details makes the story feel very choppy. Also I've been listening for more than 7 hours and something exciting should've happened by now.
