Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies is an easy read that pulls you in and makes you pay attention. I watched the show and a friend lent it to me, and it was so interesting to see all the foreshadowing details. I had major goosebumps reading the plot twist, even though I already knew what was happening.

There should be a trigger warning for domestic and sexual abuse, but otherwise I’d recommend this to anybody looking to read a page turner.

4.5 stars. sooo fun and easy to read. i was kind of turned off by the writing style at the beginning, but got drawn in pretty fast and couldn’t put it down

Very cute and easy read. I read it in two days, then binged on the HBO series. Definitely a lighter feel than the TV show. Good beach read if you're looking for something light.

This book is a stunningly raw and hugely significant plot buried under writing that unfortunately does not capture the full spectrum of the powerful, powerful pain and heartbreaks that connect this incredible cast of characters that are each living their own version of a lie. Here is one of the rare pieces of literature where the adaptation just absolutely blows the source material out of the water. I am grateful to Moriarty for writing a story that would come to resonate so strongly with me, but I have to say that the HBO adaptation is by far the best way to approach this lovingly crafted, heartbreakingly real story that speaks to the complexity of the human condition. Moriarty's prose and often over-the-top dialogue simply doesn't do the emotion of the story justice.

This story is about abuse and self-doubt and the inexplicably mixed spectrum of emotion that clouds what appears from the outside to be a black-and-white situation. The additions of the HBO adaptation elevate the great ideas from Moriarty's novel into something that feels even more real and nuanced, improving static characters like the MacKenzies and the Kleins and dropping some of the extra fat storylines like Jane's parents. Ultimately, I believe this is one of the most powerful stories I have ever encountered in entertainment, but I really have to recommend the show first. The book is nice if you'd like some additional detail or insight into how the story changed, but the show brings to the table everything that the book establishes and then adds an indelible sense of raw, human emotion boosted by visual and musical cues that the book's writing simply isn't strong enough to portray.
