Entertaining
I’m not a big fiction reader, but this book was written well, and kept my attention. It’s humorous but realistically painful.

REREAD:
Idunno, this just really works for me. Sure, there are a couple of dumb plotlines (like the Abigail one and arguably the Tom one which is just a BIT too cheesy) but overall Moriarty is really good at creating and integrating the different strands into something that is both greater than the sum of its parts and made up of interesting parts.
Also, a completely different entity than the TV show. Nobody intending an accurate depiction of Ed would cast Adam Scott, for example, and I feel like part of what makes Madeline work is that she's genuinely middle/upper middle class, not whatever "California normal" rich situation they have going on.

I think it was a little too long but the end was so crazy.
Graphic: Domestic abuse
I just couldn't let go of the ongoing mystery! It's fun, hilarious and sad at the same time! The moments in the book are so perfectly written. Some of the quotes I absolutely loved are:
“I mean a fat, ugly man can still be funny and lovable and successful,” continued Jane. “But it’s like it’s the most shameful thing for a woman to be.” “But you weren’t, you’re not—” began Madeline. “Yes, OK, but so what if I was!” interrupted Jane. “What if I was! That’s my point. What if I was a bit overweight and not especially pretty? Why is that so terrible? So disgusting? Why is that the end of the world?”
“It’s because a woman’s entire self-worth rests on her looks,” said Jane. “That’s why. It’s because we live in a beauty-obsessed society where the most important thing a woman can do is make herself attractive to men.”
“Everyone wanted to be rich and beautiful, but the truly rich and beautiful had to pretend they were just the same as everyone else."
“women are like the Olympic athletes of grudges.”
“It shouldn’t matter. She knew it shouldn’t matter. But the fact was that some people were so unacceptably, hurtfully beautiful, it made you feel ashamed. Your inferiority was right there on display for the world to see. This was what a woman was meant to look like. Exactly this.”
“But every time she tried yoga she found herself silently chanting her own mantra: I’m so boooored, I’m so boooored.”

There was too much filler and fluff but perhaps that was intentional to contrast with the underlying subject matter of domestic violence? I was surprised by the big plot twist but the rest of the story was predictable.
Couldn’t put this book down. Vivid characters and great plot line. Great murder mystery that doesn’t read like a murder mystery.

This book was extremely captivating and well written, I love the authors writing style but also the story left suspense the whole way through as you never expect the deceased parent to be who it was. I think the story also raised awareness on very important issues such as bullying but not just from the children, in the world of adults passive agression and domestic violence. It touches on learnt behaviours and the impact of lies no matter how big or little, inclusive of trauma people hide.
I would give it 4.5!
I agree with most of the other reviews I've read. This book is definitely more of a drama /gossip of pta moms and housewives, but I loved it! That's my cup of tea! It was well written and never boring! There was great comedic relief by the children, and I loved all the main characters! I only wish we had more clarification of what happened to everyone! I want to know where they are all now!
