I found this book quite unassuming at first but by the end of it was completely blown away. This story reminded me that so often the people that hurt us are honestly trying their best, and that doesn’t make it okay but it does invite room for forgiveness. It also made me want to learn more about the Chinese cultural revolution.

This book isn't perfect, but I'll still recommend it to friends. The premise is really interesting, and it was enjoyable to read, especially in the beginning. In the final few chapters, I found myself distracted by the writing in a way that I hadn't been earlier in the book - there were so many descriptions of minute details (in the US portions), and it felt like the author was hitting me over the head with the scientific debates.
