This was a speed pick up at B&N when looking for a book for myself after choosing books for a friend- and it was worth it.
PROS:
Awesome story
Badass characters
GOOD romance (finally!)
Unique setting
Plot twists

CONS:
Feeling of repetitiveness
Cliffhanger (not that this is a big problem, but a problem nonetheless)

I'll break down my pros and cons-
Awesome story: this kind of explains itself. I'm attempting to not give away any spoilers, 'cause if you're like myself you'll most likely tell yourself you won't click on those spoilers...
But then your fingers find the mouse.
End of story.

Badass characters: the complexity. The depth of personality. The way I became attached to these people- especially Tipp. He now has a place in my heart.

Good romance: it was bland at first. A little boring. But then it EVOLVED. Might have helped that I had just watched If. I kept picturing Jaren with Ryan Reynold's personality. Which helped, considerably.

Unique setting: i had never before read a book where the main character was a prisoner for the entire book AND the book was a fantasy. Unheard of. And a fantasy death/torture prison where Kiva becomes friends with prisoners who are loveable but have questionable backgrounds? You know who I'm talking about.

Plot twistsssss!!!!: there were only a few, but they were great in impact. That's all that needs to be said.

Now for the cons-
Feeling of repetitiveness: some of the main actions seemed to repeat several times, with not much change in story line.

In summary, READ THIS BOOK.
You'd better enjoy it.

Best wishes,
Mira

⭐⭐⭐⭐.75

This was a great first book to a new trilogy. I want to give it 5 stars, but i have a feeling the next book could just be slightly better so im giving it 4.75 stars. The plot was so interesting, to me this was unique because of the prison setting and of the medieval kingdom sort of setting.

Kiva as a main character was amazing, i loved her. She is so strong, so tough but also really caring at the same time. Her occupation as a healer was so interesting, and her backstory about her dad and brother was so lovely but also devastating.
Jaren also is so sweet, he is amazing. I really like how he banters with Kiva and also helps/ supports her.
Tip just a cutie as well, and so innocent despite growing up in the prison.

The whole book was great but the last 100 pages had some many unexpected reveals and twists that i loved and now i need answers to my questions (lol).

I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. There is stuff that i want to happen and i cannot wait to see if it does

I haven't felt like this about a fantasy book in a looong time

I truly loved this book. Not many twists catch me off guard but the end of this book threw me several curveballs in a row. Amazing!

Absolutely loved this book. So nice to finally read a book again with seriously good plottwists, that you didn't see coming until they happend. Also very interesting to have the black pages in this book, added something extra to the story. And the ending still got me thinking.... Can't wait to start the second book.
