I am more of a locked room mystery type of gal. I love the claustrophobic atmosphere, suspicion, and danger that kind of mystery brings to the table. So of course I was disappointed that the entire book didn’t stay at the fancy Swiss hotel — instead we only get a night and two days there (I think). It seems to me that the last 4 or so books by Ruth Ware have leaned more into the crime/thriller/someone-on-the-run type of mystery lately. Which others may find thrilling but they are not my cup of tea, leaving me wishing for her older books. I get she probably wanted to do something different with this book than the first one in the series… I just found it to be a bit lackluster. I thought the book was a tad too predictable, which made the middle drag. The ending was also disappointing and there were  a few questions that were left unanswered. Not in the ambiguous way either, but in the author-forgot-she-included-this-to-the-story way.  If this is the new direction Ruth Ware wants to go, that’s fine. I just don’t think I’ll be quite as eager to pick up any of her new books.

The main thing I remember about The Woman in Cabin 10 is how much I disliked the main character. Turns out the protagonist is still insufferable in the sequel and not very bright, making one idiotic decision after another. (And for someone described as "too honest" and "unable to lie" she sure lies a lot.) The plot tries to be twisty, but all in all it's not very engaging. The mystery isn’t much of a mystery, and the plot holes are hard to ignore. Ruth Ware can be an entertaining writer, but this book just isn’t it.
