Two long library holds came up at the same time which meant I read "All the Light We Cannot See" and this back-to-back. Based on what I usually read and others' recommendations, I expected to like this a little more, so I chose to read it second.
Perhaps it was because I like ATLWCS so much more than I expected, or that I came into this with such high expectations, but this was a *relative* disappointment. By no means a bad book, but one I had higher hopes for.
Reason to round down: I didn't find two of the three timelines to be all that interesting, and their connection to each other wasn't compelling enough to drive the story forward until about page 400.
Reason to round up: Luckily I basically cannot DNF a book I've started, because the last 150-200 pages were great, and it was all brought together through the POV of perhaps my least favorite main character. An unexpected surprise to say the least. And despite my previously stated issues with the plot/pacing of the book, the prose is beautiful throughout.

This book is bizarre. I wanted to love it like I loved All the Light, but it's just so abstract and so many different, converging story lines, your brain is always wondering what is really happening. The ending is great but it takes too long, too meandering, too far out there to get to a conclusion.

I spent quite a bit of time wondering how the pieces of this book came together, but when they did it was quite beautiful. I loved the children listening to and restoring the Greek story. I read all the Greek mythology I could when I was young, in a small town school and library, those were the easiest to get! It was so interesting to see ties from Ancient Greece thru the future. I was beginning to catch on to the plot in the future, but it still surprised me. A very good story.
