I enjoyed this book but did not like it. It seemed like it was trying to weave too many storylines at once, and while things came together at the end, it felt discombobulated at times. It probably could have been cut down a bit, but at the same time, I didn't hate it.

I enjoyed this book. The mystery pulled me in and, although slightly flawed, I was intrigued by the main character. I feel like the queer aspect got regulated to the side and could’ve been addressed more throughout.

Gripping and mysterious. Definitely a must read for sci fi and palaeontology nerds!

An interesting sequel to Frankenstein, though Part I was unnecessarily long. Touching exploration of grief and recovery with a sweet semi-platonic queer love story that lightens up the ending in particular.

As the author noted, they also wanted to show how a woman who refuses to sand down her authentically rough edges gets on in the world (Victorian era or today) compared to white male counterparts, which can make this story hard to read as Mary struggles against the confinements of her "place." I thought that aspect was too heavy-handed, but certainly a worthy theme since it's relatable to so many.
