This was so incredibly beautiful. I felt like I was being told a story by a friend and that I had the privilege of being let into the narrator's life as a confidant, rather than just having the story described to me. It was a special experience to get to read this wonderful work and it certainly has become one of my favorites.

I might have actually enjoyed the author's note a bit more than the actual book. It is an excellent idea for a book. The execution could have possibly been better.

had too many ideas about this book when a friend said it was like Shelley's Frankenstein. I think it colored how i read this.

the husband was so useless he was the worst

parts of this were so disgusting i wanted to throw up (a lot of research especially with living creatures can be so gross) where was the irb fr

this only recently was published but some of it feels like it's from 2016 idk how exactly to explain it

i can't believe it was a group project and everyone was like yea lets do this its not weird lol and also the other people in the group sucked like they were the worst

i think it got more interesting when mary realizes the creature cannot heal and therefore is always in pain but the way she was so comfortable playing god and not really horrified at herself for making it in the first place is so funny to me like how

im going to talk this book over with bestie bc she loved it and now i wanna know why

"It is a ravenous thing, ambition; even more so than curiosity"

The pacing of this novel did the story a huge disservice. While I love an atmospheric storyline, I still require thematic contemplation to occupy my mind. Almost 60% of this book was dedicated to simple day-to-day recounting. Various scientific presentations, diner parties, conversations occur to hound in the fact that the 19th century was deeply misogynistic and racist. I did not need that many chapters to explain to me why exactly Mary was so angry.

While the original Frankenstein focused so deeply on questioning in the face of advancement, contemplating the responsibility of creators for their creations, the influence of family on character, and the downfalls of ambition over morality, we get barely any concrete exploration of similar themes in Our Hideous Progeny. It failed to offer anything unique or distinct from the original Frankenstein, and it could even be argued that it offers far less. There are scattered thoughts that prompt the beginning of interesting conversations, but they occur in the last few chapters of the book and are quickly abandoned before any true contemplation occurs.

In my opinion this book is soooo underrated! I loved every single second of it.

The story is the perfect Victorian gothic tale that merges Frankenstein vibes with a modern but well thought out prose. It makes the story more accessible and allows to focus on women in STEM but in the 19th century. It’s a feminist exploration of the inequalities between genders in the scientific community which to a lesser extent are still prevalent today. It’s an engrossing tale of ambition, betrayal, love, scientific discovery and morality, which brings us to the question of ethics in the pursuit of innovation and knowledge.

The story starts of slow with Mary finding herself in a tight spot in regards to money due to her husbands mistakes. She’s by far the better scientist and smarter person but being a woman, she’s being ignored by most men, even infuriatingly her own husband who has married her among other things for her curiosity in science. Mary is the niece of the original Dr Frankenstein, which leads her to receive his letters relating his experiments to bring a creature back to life from sewn up pieces. This leads our protagonist on a eerie journey of experiments.

The atmosphere is impeccable. It’s the eerie and gothic, crazy scientist vibe we can expect from such a book. It also brings forward commentary on the expectations of women in society, the genius of women that had to publish their discoveries under their husbands names and the morality of bringing back to life a creature that shouldn’t exist.

The characters have depth and evoked guttural reactions from me. Mary was a strong and unapologetic protagonist who tried her best to balance on the tight rope between gentle society and her want to change things for women in science. Her husband made me want to strangle him because this man couldn’t do a single thing right and he was the most infuriating product of his time despite some bits of lucidity and good will.

The pacing is rather slow and melancholic but things pick up past the halfway point as soon as the setting and characters are established and it doesn’t stop for anyone. The ending is a bit too convenient in my opinion but also oddly fits the story and is satisfying so I’m not too hung up on it.

Overall, I really loved my time with this book. I didn’t want to put it down and the atmosphere is top notch. Would really recommend it if you’re looking for a Victorian gothic story with the race for scientific discovery at the core of it (without it being bugged down by scientific jargon).
