thought this was 'tee hee what if frankenstein but dinosaurs!!!' but it's actually 'what if the true monsters are men, and the ways that a white patriarchal society shrinks and shrivels women and queer people and disabled people and people of colour in order to oppress and marginalise them for their own benefit. also there are dinosaurs'. gorgeous, delicious, hideous

"Frankenstein, but, like, with dinosaurs?" Also fierce women, terrible men, and subtle queerness. I don't recall how this book ended up on my TBR, but I'm very glad it did. To be honest, I don't know if I've ever read Frankenstein in full...regardless, this book, while obviously uses Frankenstein as a starting inspiration, it also holds well as it's own. The way it expands on the original and draws in other elements is super fun.

Also, I appreciate how often Mary wants to kick horrible people.

Well written and interesting. A feminist reimagining of the Frankenstein tale.

I had never seen nor heard of this book until my hoopla app recommended it to me (hoopla knows what’s up). This is a queer, feminist homage (perhaps sequel) to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I am typically hesitant to read literature based on novels that are on my beloved and formative lists, but the premise of Our Hideous Progeny was too intriguing to pass up. Mary is a complex and formidable FMC who struggles with loss and grief while trying to prove herself in the male-dominated scientific research world. She marries Henry, who shares her passion for geology and scientific discoveries, thinking she will be his equal in their research. Villains abound in this novel as it explores the existential questions initially posed by Shelley in Frankenstein: When does science go too far? Can it? What is the essence of a being? What makes a person human? What is the soul?

I’m still processing this novel, but wow, was it entertaining and thought-provoking!

i truly did not expect to love this as much as i did but oh my god it was amazing and mary is such a great character i will remember her for a while <3

It took a while for me to engage with Mary and dive into this book. Once I did, I was captivated. The fact that there are still articles written about the difficulty women and nonbinary folks face in geology shows the lineage from Mary to myself
