The world is interesting and I would like to know more, but the writing style and the characters aren't working for me.

Good story. Found several things hard to accept. The characters went from hatred to love in the blink of an eye.. The finale seems easy... Although ultimately it ends in a cliffhanger... And the end of the story was hard for me to believe... For Someone to just sneak off like she did... Without speaking to the hero.. I didn't see that as realistic.. I will probably continue with the series..

I was able to get this book on Amazon for free. I am so glad I did! I loved it. I am going right now to get the rest!

No Anita Blake but it is definitely just enough action and romance.

This one really didn't do it for me. Sydney just felt like a needy slut who disregarded even the most basic tenets of self-preservation, but still miraculously never seemed to get hurt. The dialogue was unnatural. Here is an example: “Now, now, little whore. You will not get away from me so easily. Consider yourself lucky that I cannot take your body for my own carnal pleasures before giving you to my Mistress. So greedy she is...she wants you all to herself.” Ugh, really? Sydney's dedication to the children at the children's centre came out of nowhere and felt very much like a forced effort to give her character some depth. It is a stunning example of insta-love. For Kade it starts before they even actually meet. Apparently a giant diamond engagement ring says I'll love you for eternity better than a sacred blood bond. Who knew? The foray into the bondage scene just felt like pointless titillation and the sex scenes lacked sizzle.

There was a good mystery involved, but the whole thing wrapped up far too easily...and apparently no one needs a warrant to go kicking in doors in Philadelphia or New Orleans anymore...oh and why did it start in Philly again? There were also a number of editorial mistakes. So yea, not for me.

There were a few really funny lines though. Example: "Yep, no matter how supernatural you were, testicles were always vulnerable. Tried and true, Sydney loved how that worked." Yep, funny. Setting the book in two such historic cities allowed for some good environmental atmosphere and I appreciated that. Plus, all of the alpha males seemed to be loyal, honourable, and looking for their forever mate. That's sexy in and of itself. I think there's probably a lot of potential here, but it didn't feel realised...at least not in my opinion. Of course, that's all any of this is.

The story is fast paced, hard, ballsy, and frustrating (but in a good way). The voice, the tone, of the story had a no-nonsense, hardened cop feel I just loved. I can't help but like Sydney, who is about the most hardheaded person I've ever met. She is everything that I just described the story as. She is sexy and fun and I find it hilarious that every guy she's encountered so far in the book wants to screw her brains out. And I loved that when the male lead turns her down, she decides to go and boink his friend.

Like a good mystery, the story keeps you guessing. The author keeps the tension ramped the entire time, either with the case or with the ever growing sexual tension between Kade and Sydney.

The only true fault I had with the book was with the first dead body - the floater. The body was too new to be a floater. Why was the skin slack? A body that's a couple of days old is entering the first few days of decomp. Bodies don't float until 8-10, under rare conditions starting at 7. The body's skin doesn't become slack until after gas build up has dissipated, which is long after the floating stage. So why was it called a floater? Why didn't the coroner correct that assumption? Why was she called a coroner when the city of Philadelphia has a Medical Examiner's office on 321 University Ave? Why did she put the coroner's office in the same building as the police station when there is no medical examiner's office in the same building as a police station? The closest I could find was a University Police Department. But those are minor things that would probably only matter to you if you either lived in Philly or had experience in law enforcement.

As a word of warning, the ARC copy I received had head hopping. While this doesn't bother me, I know it bothers some, so I felt it only right I include that in my review.

In closing, this book had me glued to the "pages" the entire way. Even with the initial inconsistency in the crime scene, this is definitely a five star read.

This author was a first for me and this story was good. I thought the characters were well written and look forward to reading the next book in the series since it is Luca who did not care for humans. I thought Sydney got to him since she knew that he didn't quite care for her.

I wanted to like this as much as the others in the series, that I have read. But somehow it fell kinda short of the mark. I found Sydney annoying and I didn't buy Kade's attraction to her. I liked Tristan's character better and not just because I've already read his book. I skimmed through the action at the end. Overall it was a fun read but it seemed to me that the author didn't hit her stride in this series til the second book. A wee bit too much repetition and the author telling you 'it's so'.
