this took some warming up and I very nearly put it on the books-I've-given-up-on shelf but something told me not to.
an every so slightly different take on vampires, it delves into a hideous crime that goes back to a woman scorned and her quest for revenge.
some sex scenes, (with not so good verbal scenes) and violence.
the only thing is, I want to read the next one and this month I'm not allowed to buy any books!!! (this part was free! )

I read this because it had such high reviews, but now I don't understand why. The writing to me seemed like throwing a dart into a thesaurus because every sentence seemed to have to have at least two to three hard lithe blinding adjectives. And the heroine starts off to be a tough female cop - but as the book dragged on and on - she just got whimpier and more pathetic. The character, the writing and top it off with a strange story that was less believable as the story went on. I'm a big fan of paranormal, romance, mystery & erotica but I think this author needs to stick to just one genre for now. Sorry, this wasn't my cup of tea.
I saw a question online today that asked which you preferred, vampires or shifters? For the life of me, I cannot answer that as they both have traits that I fall in love with time and time again. This book has both, although the vampires do take the lead in this book. You have Kade, the slack wearing vampire, and Tristan, the cool, shabby chic nightclub owner. Sydney, the main female is mostly okay but did come across as too stubborn (bordering on naively stupid) in some parts. She has already been attacked by a werecat but seems to think that she knows better about how to deal with a psycho vampire than another actual vampire. Still, saying that, she has guts and is a good shot, and a bit like Luca, I found myself warming to her as the book went along.
As a round up, the plot is well written and the pace is continuous throughout. The characters are developed well but I have my favourites as I do in any book. There is humour, suspense, action and of course, sex. Will definitely be putting the others on my TBR list.

Every woman in this story gave massive written-by-a-man vibes, with all their huge boobs threatening to spill out of their clothes with the slightest movement. And of course, they all were small, thin and athletic. With huge boobs, which was mentioned constantly. Everyone thinks of sex almost exclusively, even when they are thinking about the murders. Sydney gets aroused in the grossest, most disturbing situations. And of course very single male character wanted to fuck her. And at times, she kinda behaved like a middle aged misogynistic prick.
The head hopping was insane, and sometimes we get one paragraph from a character’s perspective and never see them on page again. Mostly for them to tell us how hot Sydney is, and how much they want to fuck her. Which, this being the straightest story ever, means no other female perspective is ever given, only Sydney’s.
Kade was extremely controlling, toxic, but of course he’s hot, so we forgive him (not) for all the condescension and contempt he throws around at everyone. He mansplains things constantly, and for all of Sydney’s thoughts of “independence” she just lets him get away with anything. And it wasn’t only Sydney he wanted to control, oh no, it was everything and everyone. He seemed to have turned all of his “friends” without asking them if they wanted it, with the excuse of them dying, and all. And of course all of them work for him, because the controlling asshole wouldn’t have it any other way. The only vampires in this story that weren’t turned by him are the villains, because of course they are evil, since he didn’t choose them himself.
The only thing that kept me listening was the narrator. Ryan West did an amazing job, he nailed all the accents, and I could identify which character was talking just by their accent. It’s not his fault that the writing wasn’t particularly good.

This story could have been really good, but it ended up just being... off. I think the world building was okay but could use work. I didn’t like either main character. The relationship development was like a bizarre enemies to lovers/insta love type thing? The plot itself is decent, but for me the romance just totally killed this book. I don’t usually discuss love scenes in my reviews- but oh my god the way they are written in this book is so awful. The word choices and descriptive phrases are just terrible and made me cringe. This is an urban fantasy/crime solving book, but these scenes are written as if it’s a bodice ripper- they don’t fit the world the author created. They might be the worst I’ve ever read.
I made it further than a lot of people with this book (last the climax of the story), but I still DNF’d with about an hour to go on the audiobook.
