“All right, enough,” said Jules. “We’re taking a break from killings and profiles for dinner.” He took the boxes from Emma, shooting her a grateful look, and set them down on the coffee table. “I don’t care what you all want to talk about, it just can’t involve murder or blood. Any blood.”

“But it’s vampire pizza,” Livvy pointed out.

“Immaterial,” Julian said. “Couch. Now.”.

Why Julian Blackthorn matters:

So often the YA lit love interest is the bad boy. Julian, however, is a responsible adult. He’s gentle, generous, and loving as he sacrifices personal comforts to raise his younger siblings. He was an intriguing character and a welcome relief from the stereotype.

I have always loved the shadowhunter world, but this one didn't do it for me. I don't care if Emma and Jules get together or not and I don't care about the love triangle between other characters. I wish the book focused more on Emma's training and missions and what makes her her, but I feel like we got a watered down version. Like we were told how hard she trains not shown.

On the other hand, I absolutely love Jules. He is exceptional. His love for his family, the sacrifices he's willing to make, the burdens he holds. The author really showed us his character time and time again. He's interesting and dynamic and I'm excited to see what he does just.

Some parts of the book I was very immersed in, and as always I do like her writing style and world, as well as forming an attachment to her characters. I will be continuing the story for sure, just not immediately.
