This story starts slowly, diving into Anne de Bourghs childhood and background. As a minor character in my favorite story, it took a minute to become invested but the beautiful writing and compelling idea of Anne as a victim of drug-dependence since infancy captured me. This book is written with such thoughtfulness, to each character and their way of seeing 19th century England, to Anne as a woman with potential to “live, and love, however she chose,” and to the readers that love the characters of Pride and Prejudice. I particularly enjoyed the view of John Fitzwilliam, who felt so consistent with his existing characterization. This is one of the first Austen adaptations that I’ve read that really felt familiar and enchanting.
I only wish Anne and Eliza had experienced more of the joys of their relationship in the book, rather than seeing the happy ending summarized.

Another great contemporary addition to the P&P universe. I'm finding that I quite enjoy these stories where we deep-dive into a minor character.

For whatever reason, though, I wasn't quite as compelled by this novel as I was by The Other Bennet Sister, which is the last one of these takes I read. This one is a bit lighter on plot, maybe, and it feels a bit too long. Part 4, in my opinion, was completely unnecessary and can be omitted from your reading.
Moreover, what the f is the author trying to say about substance dependency and abuse in Part 4?? Because it kind of seems like they're glamourizing it by having Ann return to using laudanum, which is not cool.

A very enjoyable example of the reimagine a classic minor character trope, with a really beautifully done ending. My only complaint was that the detox process felt a little glossed over, which didn’t seem right given how central it is to Anne’s development.

there is a lot to like about this book! i'm glad that ann de bourgh is getting her backstory moment. the heiress didn't feel like austen (which is probably good?) but it was a lovely story about healing and strength and a woman's relationship to her landscape (which is admittedly an austenian feature). i thought greeley's handling of the characters introduced in p&p was pretty solid, but i was definitely more excited about the characters she invented. finally, and i cannot stress this enough: MORE LESBIAN ADAPTATIONS OF AUSTEN'S WORKS! THANKS :)
