This book didn't have an immersive era as other Star Wars books that cover different eras. There's swords instead of light sabers and slow ships and no hyperspace. The plot is shallow and the search for Lanoree's brother is flat. Even when Lanoree is caught by her brother there is barely any interesting dialogue. The subplot was very slow and already predicted, becoming boring. Luckily the parallelism of the subplot and the main plot near the end save it. Tre was a more interesting character than Lanoree who was static. Overall the book was mediocre bridging between a 2 and 3 but closer to a 3.

Rating Update 3/12/2019 - 3 to 2 stars. Because I found it boring, it doesn't mean I liked it (3 stars).

Rating Update 3/13/2019 - 2 to 1 stars. I just remember hating this book after having read it. Way too boring.

Update 7 June 2019
With the adoption of my new rating system, a one star rating is befitting. I recall hating this book for many years after finishing it. This is a definite one star rating.

Update
I would like to add that I believe my hatred for this book was aimed at the boredom I received while reading the book. I no longer hate it now but I recall hating its lengthy, two hundred and fifty pages.

Update
I have just recalled a memory of stopping midway through the book, glancing at the page number, and hating how long and dull the book was up to that point.

I give this one 3.5 stars. I know a lot of people complain about how the story jumps from past to present, and to an extent I agree. Maybe if the author put some dates it would have helped quite a bit. Other than that, I quite enjoyed the story. Meeting new characters and exploring new worlds is what fascinated me. Lots of brutal scenes that made it badass!

I could not care about a single character it introduced a bunch of cool concepts in the least interesting way and never mentioned them again

This book is never really drew me in.  There was not a lot of character development, in fact I never really got a feel for who the main character was. The villains motivations were also not clear at all. Be aware, this story takes places thousands of years before the well known "Star Wars: A New Hope".  If you are reading to see familiar characters, skip this novel.  I think this book was written as a kind of and intro to the "Dawn of the Jedi" comics.  As such, it ends with a cliff hanger that  will not be resolved unless you read the comics, which I am not inclined to do.  I would have liked a more satisfying less ambiguous ending.  Otherwise, the writing was okay. If you are into generic good vs evil stories, you might enjoy this.

Not the worst book I've ever read, but not the greatest either. By the end of it I wanted to wring both Lanoree and Dalien's necks - the former because she kept letting her emotions get in the way of her duty and letting her insane brother live when she should have gone for the kill whenever possible, and the latter because he was a dumbass and a madman hell-bent on carrying through with his plans regardless of the consequences.

Not a big fan of how this book went. I learned, after the fact, that this was basically the final expanded universe Star Wars novel published before Disney chose to erase all the existing continuity, so maybe that has something to do with it.
There are a lot of inconsistencies here. It's a neat idea to read about the origins of the Jedi (or Je'daii this far back in time) and see them even pre-lightsabers with metal swords and such. But why the particular solar system origins, and why make it that Humans, Twileks, Wookies and Nogrhi be the first interacted species?
It had the makings of something good, being about the pursuit of the hypergate and therefore eventual intergalactic travel, but it also just didn't mesh either.
Also didn't help that half the book was actually previews of other SW books. I guess the book itself is still a good length, but finding yourself finished at only 60something% was a put off.
