So I have to admit, as incredulous as the premise of this whole series is, it is even more incredible to see the same characters suffer through the most unbelievable things - I mean how much can anyone go through and still survive, not only intact but mentally sane and, dare I say, reasonably happy? That said, I still gave it four stars. Why? Because "reading" about Jamie and Claire is like visiting old friends. I get into my car every morning and afternoon for my commute and listen to the voice of the divine Davina Porter, set to a perfect 1.5X speed - fast enough not to doze off and slow enough to savor the story and the performance - and tag alongside the Frasers while they live through their adventures. So long as Diana writes these books and Davina narrates them, I will continue to listen and give 4 star reviews :-)

The next part of the story. Bonnet is found and killed. Bri gets pregnant again. Roger almost dies. Jamie switches sides in the war. Claire is raped. The house burns down and it's possible they are going back to Scotland. Bri and Roger take their kids back to the future to help their daughters heart condition.

Much like Drums of Autumn, this book just wasn't my cup of tea. The book starts out with graphic violence, followed by more graphic violence and graphic rape and then focuses on some just terrible people. Gabaldon has crafted her characters well, but Wendigo, Malva and Allan Christie, and Stephen Bonnet are not people I enjoy spending time with. It's not an overall fun read. There are a lot of the historical details I really enjoy, and some cool depictions of the leadup to the American revolution and 18th century medicine and science...but so much DRAMA. Things move along and a lot of old questions are answered, so it's a better read than Drums of Autumn at least.
