Saw this book at Books-A-Million while browsing the store. I was attracted to the cover of the book. I found it kind of ironic because I was debating whether to go into the bookstore or not but decided to go in anyway. I wanted to find a good poetry book so as I walking down the isle I saw this book. Never heard of the author so decided to open the book and when I read...Black Girl They Say You Ain't 'Posed To Be Here drew me in. Not to mention the artwork which is gorgeous. Kuddos to Jess X. Snow. Loved the book and decided to buy it. A book All black girls should read.

First, I would like to say that I loved this poem. I want to send it to every school library in Chicagoland so that every little black girl can read it.

I would love to see this beautiful poem be expanded into a collection that provides a larger conversation about the extent of black girl magic.

While I love Beyonce and Kerry Washington, I would love more examples of successful black women in all sorts of fields. Let's write and talk about Mama Lola (religious leader and actual badass), Roxane Gay, Bessie Coleman, Maxine Waters, Coretta Scott King! Let's talk about the black girl magic that voted Roy Moore out of office in Alabama.

This was not written for me in any way. But I can sense the how impactful it must be to Black females of all ages. The artwork is wonderful and emphasizes the words so well.

A beautifully illustrated book showcasing a solid poem from Mahogany L. Browne. I love the way the inside of the cover speaks to the roll call of all the women before her that helped build the platform on which she stands. Stunning work.

This is a powerful poem, gorgeously illustrated by Jess X. Snow. While this appears to be a picture book, it will speak most strongly to teens and young adults.

One of those rare moments when I want to give a book way more than 5 stars. Not sure that younger kids would really understand all of it, but I think girls 10+ would be fine.
