Wow! Ted Dekker writes another amazing book . . . I love how he ties these books in with many of his other books.
2020 Book Nerd Your Way ..... #23.

Good start to this little series. Packed with adventure right from the start! Caught and held my attention. The narrator was pretty good to, which is a bonus. Can't wait to go on with the series... but I'm really not sure how I felt about that cliffhanger on the end.... dang.

It was alright. Pretty distinctive characters and does a good job of laying down the foundation of the rest of the series. I probably won't read the rest of the series but shhh.
I think this is a great family-friendly book. You can read this your kid and discuss its similarities to the history and the Bible, all while enjoying a fun and interesting story of bravery and love.
This is a YA book, I believe. The characters are interesting. The book isn't nearly as gory or disturbing as Ted Dekker's normal novels, which is a plus for me since I can be very freaked out by horror. And I did enjoy the book. There was sufficient suspense to keep me wanting to finish reading it. I liked the bats.
But that's pretty much all the good I can say about it. Now for negatives. There may be spoilers ahead, depending on what your definition of a .
The theme isn't quite as good as his better books though, and feels like something you would find in a Disney movie: a meaningless sentence that basically means, follow your gut instincts. And the quest was too easy to fulfill. It felt more like one of those easy quests you're given at a renaissance fair to find these objects, and some fake danger to up the stakes. But the characters weren't forced into situations where they had to make choices and thus show us more of their character. In the end, it was too easy. And though I felt like there should have been more bad guys left to fight in the end, everyone's singing and dancing as though a war is over and there isn't any more danger to fear.

I first read this book and the other first few (can’t remember where I left off) about 8-ish years ago and decided to reread them.
I always like when fantasy stories are set in the future of our world. It’s just really interesting to me and not something you usually see.
The books have an interesting premise with real stakes and an ever-present threat that gives good tension to the story. The characters are entertaining as they adjust to each other and their individual personalities.
Reading some reviews, I realized this kinda falls under “Christian fiction” (Elyon = God, Teeleh = Satan, Roush = Angels, etc). I am non religious and didn’t realize this intentional mirroring the first time I read it and enjoyed it just the same.
But a MEGA EYE ROLL at “the love between a man and a woman” being the best way of honoring the Great Romance, their religion. Christian Fiction indeed. 😒

This was the first Ted Dekker novel I'd read in a while, as well as the first book I read in a while. It was so refreshing. Ted Dekker is one of my favorite authors, and this book is brilliant. It instantly caught my attention. After reading the original Circle Trilogy, this was a wonderful refresher in the Other Earth. And who can't like Gabil? He's a wonderful character. All in all, a great book, and hopefully the beginning of a great series.
3.5 stars* for nostalgia but it’s really more of a 3
