Loved the world, loved the writing, but I absolutely hated what Daemon and Surreal's relationship had turned into and was upset that their parenting was unable to prevent Jaenelle Saetan from crashing and burning from bad influences.

Ignoring the plot decisions that I really disliked, I think the book would have been better if it had been developed into a full multi-book series instead of one giant fat book. The Orian/Dorian mini-plot cut off pretty abruptly, and I would have enjoyed reading more about the kindred and their roles in properly teaching the next generation.

The Queen's Weapons is an excellent continuation of the The Black Jewels series. This series has captivated me since book one even though fantasy is not my usual genre. This novel is about the next generation witches and warlord princes and how their choices impact the whole Kaeleer Realm. Its a little dark novel which might be for everyone since it has some triggering aspects. Will be waiting for the next book in the series.

This was painful to read, so painful. That girl, man she really had it coming. I pray and hope my kids are not weak to peer pressure like that girl.

I do think these two, because they are clearly a separation from the other black jewels novels, feel different than the early series. I enjoyed it still, but it was more noticeable the repeated tropes and things that irritate me. How many times "delicately pointed ears" gets mentioned, for one example. Surreal become a character not at all like herself until the very end, etc. Everything feels less powerful likely because in trying to make a new threat, Janelle Satien becomes part of that mess and it's hard to see her like that as Damon's daughter.

I have also been thinking about the world as a whole and what the emphasis on the virgin night does to normalize heterosexual relationships as "more valid" than homosexual. We saw it a bit in the original series with Karla and her preference for women still needing a man to see her to safety, and I worry now about Titian and Zoey. But I love that they have their budding romance and I want more queer inclusion, something drastically missing besides mentions of Karla and Ranier.
