I wrote a conference presentation on this novel and I would write another in a heartbeat for all the things I'm still left thinking about.

I hadn't picked up a Capote book in years when I saw this one on my shelf. I suppose I had bought it years ago and forgotten about it, but after reading it I soon realized why I'm a Capote fan. Nothing beats a good southern writer, especially one as self absorbed and flambouyant as Capote.

This book was about an orphaned boy going to live with the only relatives he had left in the world, and meeting them for the first time on their doorstep. He soon realizes that like he, they too, have many things to hide. While trying to figure out what haunts his relatives, he teams up with a local girl and learns possibly more about life in their small part of the world than he is comfortable with. This book had me turning each page with anticipation but left me frustrated at the end because while Capote is rich in detail about the setting and his characters, he left the ending a bit more mysterious about the boy's fate than I would have liked.

Should have left this one in the drafts, babe. Or at least let someone else read through it.

Capote dumps his teenage angst, fantasies, and moodiness in this one.

Any mildly-interesting storyline or character is ignored in favor of telling us about homeboy moping around the sinking mud palace.

I get it, “there’s underlying themes and messages” “the house represents—” girl I know what the house is!

I believe this falls into the category of “it’s not perfect, but there are whispers of superb writing.” Capote does have his FEW moments of clarity. The whole ‘God, let me be loved’ line did make me tear up. But I wasted tears on that line when the rest of the story fell flat. Dude really thinks he’s Virginia Woolf.

Let’s be honest. Capote shows a whisker of potential here, but this one is so green. Capote’s farting into the wind and people are eating (sniffing?) it up!!!

Not really worth skimming through.
