While the start is a little slow, I found myself quickly rewarded with a lot of over-the-top southern gothic and queer narrative. Quotes cut from this book seem ridiculous out of context, but the whole fabric of the narrative creates and irresistible and contained dream world that I was happy to get wrapped up in. But if you can't stand Carson McCullers, Tennessee Williams or French symbolist poetry you will probably hate this book.

The book has the skeleton of a good book: interesting characters, a macabre plot that could go a dozen different ways, and a narrator who's coming of age. But everything was too much or too little. The plot ended up not being interesting at all, the characters were either too much or two dimensional. I just didn't know what I was reading half the time, and the prose and characters were too weak to make me try to read it closer. The other half I was bored. Idabell was a breath of fresh air.
I hate American lit as a rule, though, so my disdain for this book is not surprising.
